The first time Mary is mentioned in the Bible, an Angel appears.
The angel Gabriel was sent from God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. And the virgin’s name was Mary.” (Luke 1:26-27)
Luke states that Joseph was a descendant of David, but when the family tree of Jesus is listed in Luke 3:23-38, he gives the ancestors, not of Joseph, but of Mary. Mary was also a descendant of David, but she was descended from David’s son Nathan, while Joseph was a descendant of David’s son Solomon. (Matthew 1:1-16). The gospels leave no doubt about the royal heritage of Jesus – both his biological mother and adoptive father are from the House of David.
The Angel tells her:
“Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Luke 1:30-33).
And her amazing response is:
And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” And the angel departed from her. (Luke 1:38)
That’s it. No long drawn out discussions. No what if’s or I’m not sure or can I get back to you on that? How does a young girl have such incredible faith, such trust in the Lord?
She does not hesitate to say yes to God, not even for a second. Now that is grace, pure and simple.
Mary is a great Biblical example for us to follow. Thanks for sharing
Thanks Amanda for stopping by. She is an amazing role model. I appreciate your comment.
Oh that I had the kind of faith and surrender that Mary had! I think I would have started arguing with the angel or thinking how highly God must think of me to have me beat His child. She is such a good example of humble faith for us to follow!
Hi Heather, I would have definitely started asking lots of questions, for sure. Thanks for your comment.
yup, keep it simple and notice the wisdom in the young women! thanks!
Thank you for the reminder of how Mary didn’t question god for a second. Thoughts to reflect upon.
Yep total and utter grace!! I can’t imagine how she felt yet she is so full of grace.
