Inspire literally means to breath in, to take air into your body. It also means to fill someone with the urge or ability to do or feel something, especially to do something creative. It is derived from the Latin word “inspirare” which means breathe or blow into.
The scriptural definition refers to God. 2 Timothy 3:16 tells us all scripture is inspired by God – some translations use God-breathed or breathed out by God instead.
No wonder we yearn to be inspired! Inspiration connects us with God. Being inspired is what makes it possible to move through a dark and broken world without succumbing to utter despair.
Most mind blowing of all: Our souls are also created by the breath of God, they are pure and incorruptible. God breathes life into us and our souls return to Him as He intended.
This prayer is from the Talmud:
“The soul you gave me, God, is pure. You have created it. You have formed it. You have breathed it into me. You preserve it within me. You will take it from me and restore it to me in the hereafter”.
The Mystery of Inspiration is the word means both God breathes out and we breathe in,
miraculously, at the same time.
